Before you become the conversation initiating expert, lets look at something you should not do when trying to learn a language:Starting an English ConversationAs you can see, these guys could do with practicing some English. How do you begin a conversation in English? Well, the best way is often to simply ask a question. Here are some examples to get the conversation going:Do you know what time it is?Is this seat taken?/ Do you mind if I sit here?What time is this place open until?What is your name?As you can see, most of these questions are a little direct. Do you know how we could make them more polite? Write your comments below on how to make these questions sound more friendly.Compliment in EnglishInstead of making the above questions sound nicer, you can als o simply comment on another person. For example, you could say something friendly about their appearance or a possession they have, and follow this with a question. Lets look at these examples:That is a really nice hat. Can I ask where you got it?Thats a really cool phone! Is it easy to use?Look at these images. Can you think of a way to begin a conversation? First try to compliment the person/their possession, and then ask a question. Wed love to hear your  ideas, so make sure to write them in the comments section! This is a great way to practice your English conversation skills.2.Comment on surroundings in English ConversationAnother way to start a conversation is to simply comment on what is around you. For example, if you are at a party and you want to start talking to the person next to you, you could say, Hi, this is a great party isnt it? As you can see, this is another question to invite the other person to have a conversation. It doesnt need to be a question every time to s tart a chat. Take a  look at this next sentence:I love this fish! Its so tasty.As you can see here, a simple statement can invite the other person to give you their opinion/ feeling/ interest, which can then lead to a conversation. Easy, right? As you look at these next images, write a way to begin an English conversation.2.  Now, lets try to  add a question to these comments in order to invite the other person to engage in conversation. Use the previous example above:  I love this fish! Its so tasty. How could we add a question to this? Well, we could ask Do you like fish? What is your favorite seafood? Are you a seafood lover? There are many possibilities. Try to think of a question to add to your statements above.Likes and dislikes in English ConversationWe have begun a conversation with all of these comments. The next step is to have a more interesting, in-depth conversation. By doing this, your vocabulary will improve whilst allowing you to really show your personality-the best way to make friends. Well  begin with likes and dislikes.To ask questions about someones likes or dislikes, we can use words such as like, dislike, dont like, prefer and enjoy. Look at these examples below:Do you prefer  going on vacation to the beach or to the mountains?Do you enjoy speaking English?Are there any sports that you dislike?Now, to make your English even more advanced, we can add adverbs to these sentences. Adverbs are words that can modify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. We commonly use adverbs such as quite, really, much and mostly, which often go before your like/dislike word:Do you really  enjoy speaking English?Are there any sports that you mostly  dislike?Habits in English ConversationAnother way to engage someone in conversation is to discuss habits. Habits are things  that you do regularly. We often use the present tense to talk about habits. Lets look at the sentences below:I occasionally go hiking.Typically, I wake up around 8am.Normally, I go to that re staurant for breakfast on Sunday mornings.So, how can we start talking about habits in a conversation? Thats right-we can ask questions! As you can see above, Ive added some adverbs to my questions (occasionally, typically, always), so we can ask questions using adverbs to find out how often someone does something. For example, How often do you go hiking? Can you think of questions for the last two sentences above?Changing topics in English ConversationSometimes a conversation can start to fade, and maybe the other person is beginning to lose interest. This means that it is time to change the topic. Here are some phrases we can use to switch things around:That reminds me.Example: .. I didnt like that restaurant either. That reminds me, there is a big game on TV tonightOh! Did you hear about/ that.Example: .the weather is always bad here. Oh! Did you hear the news about ?Speaking of (topic), I found out that.Example: . I agree that Brad Pitt is a great actor. Speaking of movies, I fo und out that.Can you give us any examples of you changing topics when someone is becoming bored/ uninterested? Many students will opt for the California community college system for any number of reasons. It offers high-quality professors and instructors, more affordable fees and tuition, and several campuses throughout the state. Many students dont know how to enroll in a community college, and it may prevent them from getting started on time. Students who will be choosing this path are encouraged to follow these tips to get signed up for fall term. 1. Enroll early Community College has continued to be a popular option for college freshmen for years. This means that spaces fill up fast, and many students get shut out if they sign up too late. In California, any student with a high school diploma will have the opportunity to attend a community college; however if they miss the deadline they will have to wait another semester or even a year. Enrollment doesn’t mean simply waiting in line to fill out a card so one can sign up for classes; rather its a multi-step process. Students are encouraged to visit the community college website of their choice under the prospective students tab and make sure they meet each deadline (READ: 5 things to do before you go away to college). . 2. Determine your desired workload At a community college students are not required to take a specific workload of classes. Students who work full or part time may only take a couple of classes each term while some students will take as many as five classes in an attempt to graduate or transfer on time or early. Most full time students will take four classes per term, however, its important for students to look at how many hours they will be working as well as any specific issues they may have so they can sign up for the desired number of classes. 3. Make an appointment with an academic or career counselor Probably the most important thing that the majority of community college students fail to do is make an appointment with an academic or career counselor ASAP. These career counselors are in high demand, and most of them have a months long waiting list. Students who dont make an appointment early on will have to choose their first semester classes unaided. This can lead students to take classes they didnt really need or take courses that only count for the university system they dont wish to attend. These are both great ways to spend more money and graduate late. Make that first appointment today! 4. Take any necessary matriculation exams Because California community colleges don’t require a specific admittance package, they require new students to take matriculation exams. These are exams in math and English to determine a students current skill level. If the student passes the matriculation exams, they can go straight into math and English courses that transfer to a four-year university. If they don’t pass these exams they will need to take a prerequisite course. Students who will be applying to a certificate or professional program are encouraged to investigate any exams needed for their specific program. Sign up for required prerequisites Students who need to take prerequisites (usually math, English, foreign language, or study skills) will need to sign up for these classes before taking transfer level courses. If you don’t practice it daily, you’ll never get better at it! Do a couple practice problems daily as a sure way to improve with your skills. 2. Focus on the DIFFICULT. The satisfaction of getting one type of problem right is awesome, but if you keep doing easy problems that you are already comfortable doing, you won’t improve in other areas! Push yourself and try to tackle harder, more challenging math problems so that you gain the confidence to do ANYTHING! 3. DON’T wait to get help. Having trouble trying to understand a problem by yourself? Your tutor, your teachers, and your peers are here for a reason! Ask your teacher the MOMENT you are confused about something. Squash your doubts right then and there so you can move along to understanding the rest of the concepts. If you’re shy about talking to your teachers, and have friends who un derstand the material better than you do, ask them! If you have me as your tutor, I’m so happy to clarify things for you as I’m sure other tutors are as well. That’s what we’re here for! 4. WHITEBOARDS are your best friend. Buy yourself a lap whiteboard (I got mine on Amazon) and a whiteboard marker. Not only are they fun to write on, but you can correct your mistakes without scribbling and erasing all over your work. This makes for cleaner writing, and easier math practice. Just erase and start all over! 5. TALK yourself through problems. It sounds crazy, but it actually works. Don’t just tell yourself what you’re doing, also think about WHY you’re doing it. Sometimes, holding your own hand and echoing your thoughts out loud can clarify a lot. “I’m going to add this to the other side because...” Sometimes, you catch yourself doing things for the wrong reasons and this helps you catch your errors! “Wait a second...I can’t add this, I need to subtract!” 6. D ON’T study the day before a math test! The easiest mistake to make is to put off studying until the last minute, but if you have questions about a topic the day before, you won’t be able to get them answered. Give yourself a week in advance to study and understand your weak spots. 7. PACE yourself. It’s essential to know your limits when you’re practicing math. Sometimes doing a certain topic for too long causes you to overwork your brain, and make mistakes that you wouldn’t usually make. Sit back for a second, take a 5 minute break (preferably not using technology), eat a snack, take a lap around the room to stretch,etc...your brain will thank you for it! 8. REFRESH your mind on old topics. If you get bored studying a certain topic, try to revisit old ones. This way, you don’t forget how to do them when you have to recall them on an exam or quiz. 9. BELIEVE in yourself. I know that during my time taking math classes, (especially right now as I take Calculus 2) it’s r eally easy to give up and say “I’m never going to understand this stuff...” or “Maybe tomorrow I’ll try instead...”, but put MIND over MATTER and give yourself that push! You arent  just learning nouns, adjectives and verbs. Youre learning a new culture. Youre getting a taste of how people in that culture think, what they believe and how they express themselves. Names are an important part of that.Therefore, taking the time to appreciate the significance of foreign names is going to set you on the right path, and that path continues right on to authentic language learningâ€"i.e., learning with materials where characters names in dialogues arent exactly the same in every language. How and Why to Pick a World  Language to LearnSince  high school, I have taken on  six languages in which I eventually became fluent, but I have also spe nt a significant amount of time (more than a year total) on completely failing to learn three more. It is fun to grab a textbook  and jump in.But before I had poured so much  time and effort into those three failures, I wish I had more carefully weighed their benefits, and the costs and practical issues that would eventually drag me down and cause my motivation to flag. Heres what I have found to be the top considerations to make  before taking the plunge in terms of world languages and their practicality for you.Practical considerations:Travel: How will this language enrich or enable travel experiences?Business: In my line of work, what opportunities could this language open up?Personal: Does this enrich my personal, social, family or romantic possibilities?Cultural: What music, literature, film, theater, television, etc. can I enjoy or create in this language? What activities (dance, martial arts, sports, etc.) can I take part in w ith it?Linguistic considerations:Difficulty:  How far removed is this from the languages that I know? What special challenges does this language present in terms of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and writing systems?Linguistic appeal:  What are the wild and interesting thrills that this languages grammar and vocabulary may open up as ways to  experience and reflect on the worlds events  and emotions?A Closer Look: 8 Major World Languages Thatll Steal Your HeartHere are the major world languages to consider, and a look at their selling points for the language-learning addict.EnglishIf youre reading this, you of course probably already speak English. But for the purposes of comparison with those to follow, consider that this is the worlds lingua franca in just about every domain.  One larger estimate puts the total number of (native, fluent and attempted) speakers at 2 billion, or roughly one-third of the worlds population. There are so many enriching thrills to be had in speaking other languages, but this is the single most practical language you can speak.That said, consider that another two-thirds of the planet dont  speak English, and that many (well, most) of those who do  speak it do so pretty badly. Youre going to have more interesting adventures in human  communication if you can master one or more of the other major world languages below.SpanishSpanish is spoken in Spain and in a large swath of the Americas, both of which are very appealing areas in which to live and travel. Instituto Cervantes puts the total number of native speakers at 470 million, and the total number of speakers worldwide at 559 million.Spanish also has an outsized cultural presence in the world thanks in particular to its contributions to music, film, literature and television. Ive met a number of people in my travels in Eastern Europe and Brazil, for instance, who have picked up Spanish simply because they enjoy dancing tango or watching telenovelas (soap operas).Many learners find this to be a relatively easy language to tackle, though any such judgement is of course subjective based in particular on your experience with languages close to it. But, if youve studied Latin, French or other Romance languages, you will of course find this approachable.It also shares a lot of words with English, particularly those which in English are descended from Latin.Pronunciation for many learners can be quite easy to approach, since there are only five base vowels to deal with and they are quite separate from each other; even if you dont hit them exactly youre still going to be understood. The writing system is also quite simple to learn, with very nearly one sound for each letter of the alphabet.FrenchThe French government tells us that there are 220 million French speakers on the planet, including those who speak it partially. It is, after English, the most taught language on the planet, and an important language for diplomacy. It is one of six working languages for the U.N., one of three procedural languages for the E.U., and the sole language for deliberations of the Court of Justice of the European Union.The language can be relatively easy to understand for English speakers because it shares a lot of cognates with English, thanks to the two languages intertwined histories. On the other hand, it has up to 17 vowels, depending on what you count, which  can make pronunciation a bit difficult, and the spelling system, while better than that of English, is not exactly straightforward.Mandarin ChineseThe Chinese government insists that Chinese is one single language, but since there are quite a number of not particularly mutually intelligible varieties under that umbrella, as a language learner youre going to have to start with just one. And in terms of practicality as a world language, your best choice is Mandarin, which has 897 million native speakers.Even Mandarin has a wide range of variation, but the standard version is a lingua franca in Ch ina, and can be used by Mandarin speakers from various dialects to communicate.For those coming from a tone-free, Latin-script-using language like English, Mandarin can certainly appear frightening, and it is indeed a challenge. It is difficult for adult learners to get used to using tones as part of communication  and memorizing the 4,000 characters known to  an average educated Chinese person is daunting.One blogger points out  the many challenges, including cultural factors that can be discouraging as well, including a Chinese propensity to laugh at any mispronounced phrase. On the other hand, Chinese has no cases, declensions or genders, and the tense system is relatively straightforward. If you have a personal desire to learn Chinese, you can rise to the challenge!ArabicAs with Chinese, Arabic is considered a single language, but from the point of view of a language learner it is a variety of not-mutually-intelligible, um, dialects, and you will have to pick one. There are 267 million total Arabic speakers in the world, and no one dialect is dominant, so youll have to pick based on which region or culture interests you the most.There is also the literary version of the language, Modern Standard Arabic. It is used in most written documents and in news broadcasts, and spoken as a second language by educated people throughout the Arab world. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and it is related to Classical Arabic, which is the language of the Quran.However, from the point of view of a language learner it can be quite frustrating to have the purely spoken dialect used by people in conversations and the written form to learn as well, with little overlap between them. This means that  a decision to learn Arabic generally means learning two languages.The writing system is from right to left, and the cursive (connection of an entire word) can make it difficult to approach at first. But there is at least much more consistency between sp elling and pronunciation than one finds in English, and so reading and writing can be mastered rather quickly. The language uses  three cases, eight noun declensions, and lots of other inflections that can be challenging.RussianNative Russian speakers number 171 million  according to one count, and the language is important on the world stage, with second-language speakers located particularly in the former Soviet republics. One count puts total speakers at 260 million.This gives you a huge range of lands that you could travel over and make use of the language, and these are places where often it can be harder to find people with passable English skills.The spelling system is not as scary as it looks. The 33 letters indicate mostly regular pronunciation patterns (though stress and what it does to vowels can be hard for learners to predict). The grammar on the other hand is duly frightening; cases are complex and there are many irregularities.The same is true for verb conjugations, t hough the use of perfective and imperfective aspects  to indicate the degree to which something is finished can be rather new and fun.PortuguesePortuguese counts some 202 million native speakers in the world, and one of the main appeals is that the language provides  the best music on the planet. For me, listening to music was an unending source of motivation in  learning the language.Most learners  will decide between the European or Brazilian varieties, which are written similarly, particularly since the recent standardization, but have quite different pronunciations and vocabularies.Like Spanish and French, this is a Romance language, so if you speak either one of those languages or Latin, this will be a relatively easy project. Pronunciation of some sounds, particularly open and closed vowel sounds, can be difficult for language learners.In terms of grammar it could be considered a bit more complex than other Romance languages, as Portuguese has  more total ways to inflect verbs , although in practice many of these are not used so much, particularly in the Northeast of Brazil and among less-educated speakers.HindiHindi has  some 260 million native speakers, is the official language of a number of Indian states and is used at the national level as well by many non-native speakers. It is written in the Devanagari script, from left to right, and the pronunciation is phonetic and regular.Hindi  is an Indo-European language, and that coupled with British colonization has left some cognates between English and Hindi. Tenses are straightforward but do not of course correspond exactly to English tenses, which can make choosing the right one a bit of a challenge.Which is the best language for you? I cant tell you that, of course, but I hope that this has given you a few clues as to where you might want to head.While this post focused on world languages, you definitely may also want to consider smaller, regional languages.
